2012 Read-A-Thon

Our 2012 Read-a-Thon was a HUGE success thanks to the almost 600 parent, grandparent and community volunteers who came to read with our students.

(Yes, you read that right almost 600 volunteers! Amazing!)

We really appreciate those who took time out of their busy schedules to show our students the importance of reading!  You are all wonderful and we appreciate your support!

We were fortunate enough to have many from our community come to support our school in showing our students the importance of reading.  We'd like to thank the Provo Police Department for the many officers who came out to read.  It was really exciting for some of our students to have the opportuntity to read with police officers!

A special thank you to the following state and community officials
who took time to come show support:
Utah State Office of Education Title 1 Specialist, Becky Donaldson;  Provo School District Superintendent, Keith Rittel; Provo School District Assistant Superintendent, Ray Morgan; Provo School District Title 1 Director, Gaye Gibbs; Provo School District ESL Director, Julene Kendell; and Provo City Council members, Kay Van Buren and Gary Winterton.

It was a great opportunity for all our Aviators to share this special time reading together.
Thank You!
Superintendent Rittel reading to a lucky 1st grader.

Julene Kendell, District ESL Director, reading to some very interested 2nd graders.

Provo City Council Member, Kay Van Buren, reading with one of our amazing Aviators.

Provo City Council Member, Gary Winterton, sharing a book with another awesome first grader.

How exciting to read with on of our super-supportive Provo Police officers!

We even had some cute preschoolers join in the fun!

5th Annual Fun Run

We held our 5th annual
Fun Run Fundraiser
Wednesday, October 10th.

It was big success thanks to all our students who collected pledges, our amazing Amelia Earhart families, community members who pledged and donated prizes, and local businesses who donated prizes also.  We were able to raise close to $4000 to go towards field trips this year!
Way to go!!!!

This year, Mrs. Roberts (our totally amazing Librarian) and Miss Collins (one of our awesome 4th grade teachers) lead the students in a ZUMBA warmup.  The kids LOVED it!  It was a lot of fun and it really helped them get ready for their long run.

After the run, students enjoyed an Otter Pop and made their way into the gym for our awards assembly.
There were many great prizes that students who brought in pledges were eligible to win.
The student council helped Mr. Cox and Mrs. Toronto draw out the names of our winners.
The winners took home a Wii, an iPod Touch, a digital camera, iPod Shuffles, scooters, basketballs, soccer balls, foot balls, games, gift certificates, BYU football tickets, and many more!
Thank you to our community for all your support with this event!

Here's some of the highlights...

Science Fun

Kelly from Discovery Gateway came to visit our 5th grade classes this week to teach them about
 chemical and physical reactions.

The students got to conduct experiments by mixing different solutions such as vinegar, cabbage juice, fertilizer, road salt, baking soda, or milk and they analyzed the results.

Was it a
chemical reaction or
a physical reaction?

Hands-on learning is always more fun!

Thank you, Kelly!

ZUMBA!!!!

Did you know that our very own Mrs. Roberts
is not only an AMAZING librarian but also a
certified Zumba instructor?

Yes, she is and recently she introduced some of our 6th graders to Zumba during their P.E. period.

It was so much fun the 6th graders didn't even realize they were exercising.
Just look at some of those smiles!

                                           Thank you Mrs. Roberts!

The British are Coming! The British are Coming!

Our fifth grade classes have been learning about the Revolutionary War and colonial times.
They've been "taxed" (unjustly some might say) for their use of the computers, their clothes, their desks, etc.  (They had to pay their taxes with Skittles.)
They learned about the Boston Tea Party and even threw "tea" (actually hot cocoa packets) in the King's (Mr. Cox) office because they thought they were taxed too much.
On the afternoon of Thursday, March 8th, they staged the Revolutionary War in the gym.
It was the Rebels (the 5th graders) against the British (the 6th graders).

It started with Paul Revere riding in yelling,

"The British are coming! The British are coming!"

The Rebels prepared themselves for battle. . .

The British marched in an lined up for battle. . .

Then the sock "war" began. . .

Then ended with many British "casualties". . .

It was a fun learning experience for the 5th graders and I'm sure they will always remember it.

Thank you to our fifth grade team, Mrs. Drumm, Mrs. Earl, and Mr. Zimmerman for planning such a fun and memorable activity!

National Breakfast Week 2013

Last week was National Breakfast Week.
All week long our amazing Lunch Ladies prepared fun activities for our students during breakfast.
Monday started off with a red carpet entrance and lucky students who found a sticker under their fruit cup got a prize.

Tuesday, students received bookmarks.
Wednesday, there was a "fruit walk" and some lucky students won blow-up fruit toys.

Thursday, if students found a sticker under their fruit cup, they were able to come pop a "grape" and they received a prize.
